MEN TRAPPED IN QUICKSAND
RESCUERS AT WORK TILL EARLY MORNING. Two men, sunk up to the waist in ; cjuicksand at Crumpsall, Manchester and prevented by belts held by block r.nd tackle above the surface, smoked cigarettes while firemen, policemen, six fellow-workmen, and a large number of other people worked to save their lives.
The men had been digging in a deep trench. Rescue efforts were continwhen the earth fell and buried them i:p to the neck. Efforts to release them showed that they were caught i;i quicksands at the bottom of the trench. Ruscue efforts were continued throughout the night by the light of acetvlene flares. One of the men was pulled out but went back to help Lis companion and was again trapped. Loth were rescued about 2 n.m.
