NOTES AND NEWS. Each - morning Corinax is extended at Ellerslie, writes “Early Bird,” the son of Magpie appears to improve. If'track work can be taken as a guide the Australian-bred colt may be a nuisance in whatever lie competes in at future meetings. Merry Bight, who lias been working at Ellerslie for some weeks, is a two-year-old filly by Prince Merriwee from Lady Electra.’ The other morning she was extended over four furlongs on No.l grass, and with a lightweight in the saddle covered the distance in 55sec. Merry Light is to have her first fun at the. Avondale meeting. Marita, the half-brother to the Great Northern winner Sea De’il, gave, a good exhibition over the schooling hurdles last week, while he has also galloped soundly on the sand and tan tracks. Though Marita, did not perform hopefully, inf his.,; few ’efforts in flat events this season, he should he an asset in minor hurdle events in the winter months.

It has been stated that the Australian sportsman who recently purchased Chairman paid £SOO for the Nassau—Cfulross horse.

The C.J.O. Champagne Stakes looks comparatively easy for Agrion, Mr. Greenwood’s Limond-Waterwings colt which has trained nicelly since last raced, and he is not likely to be seriously taxed to | finish in front. Eulalie is still engaged, but she lias not done a great deal of work, and she is not likely to sport silk on the day, says a Christchurch exchange. Nincompoop and Countersign will be opposed to Agrion in the Challenge Stakes, but although they will offer more serious opposition than he will encounter in the other-classic, he should still be in front at the finish.

All continuing to go well with Commendation, be will it is stated, he accorded the opportunity of wiping out the defeat lie met with in the G. G. Stead Gold Cup, when Rapine scored by half a length. The Awapuni Gold Cup, to be run over a similar distance at the Manawatu meeting on the 28th is the event which will afford Commendation a chance to get even with his aged rival.

Bretland behaved very badly when the field was lined up for the open sprint at Whangarei and he -would not go up quietly. Ho was a nuisance, and succeeded in upsetting several of the other horses, among them Delightment. Bretland will have to mend his manners, otherwise he will earn the ire of club stewards, which means that he will be placed on the schooling list. Mervettc, the half-sister to Judge’s Box, Tarleton, Bonnetter and Co., ran*her best race to date when she finished second in the second division of the Maiden Plate at Whangarei. She is owned by Mr. J. Fraser Smith, and forms one of F. Tutchen’s team at Frankton.

CHESS AN UNUSUAL GAME. Last Saturday night at the Gisborne Chess Club an unusual ending occurred in a ladder championship game. White had bishop on QBB, pawn on KR2 and king on KB2 ana could not beat Black, who had a lonely king on his knight’s third. Black played for a stalemate and succeeded by retiring to his rook’s square as the White forces advanced. Much interest was evoked, and some conjectures as to whether White could have averted the* stalemate. With the bishop on the white diagonal, a drawn game is a foregone conclusion, but had the bishop been on black squares it would have been comparatively easy for White -to eject the Black king from his corner, queen his pawn and win. Word has been received from the secretary of the Masterton Club saying that lie would reserve the two last Saturdays in July for a telegraphic match with Gisborne. LEAGUE RUGBY
