NEWS, VIEWS AND NOTES. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. (Special to the Times.) WAIROA, April 7. The monthly session of the Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday, Mr E. C. Levvey, 5.M.,. presiding. David Miinro, charged with refusing to quit licensed premises when ordered to do so, and also with a breach of his prohibition order, was convicted and fined £3 and costs on the first charge and £2 ancl costs on the second.

Jimmy Tahi pleaded guilty to a breach of his prohibition order, ancl was convicted and lined £5 and costs in default 30 days’ imprisonment. M. Ivaimoana pleaded guilty to a similarv charge and was fined £1 ancl 10s costs in default 14 days’ imprisonment. Daniel J. Murphy was charged with selling liquor during prohibited hours. He was convicted and fined £3 ancl costs, while his wife, Berenice A. Murphy, charged with supplying the liquor, was convicted ancl ordered to pay costs. Raymond Jones, Ityank Hunter ancl James McKay pleaded guilty to being on licensed premises during prohibited hours and were each fined £1 ancl costs. Claude Smith was charged with four breaches of his prohibition order, at Waikare and at Mohaka. Accused pleaded guilty to all charges and was fined £7 and £3 costs. Laurence- Johnston, Roderick Greenaway, -George Fletcher, William Fahey, Pohio Joe and James H. Gatfield were charged with committing a breach of the peace at Mohaka by lighting on the beach. They were convicted and fined 10s each ancl costs.

Peter Te Kahika and Tvarera Rotoatara were charged with using obscene language near the main road at Mohaka. Both were- convicted and fined £4 ancl 15s costs. Andrew Mc-Nao was charged with fishing for trout in Lake Waikaremoana without a special license. Defendant had a license issued by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, stamped available anywhere in New Zealand, and had been informed that it was alright for fishing in the Lake. Sergt. Wade stated this was correct and the defendant was not to blame. The case had been brought as a warning. He was convicted and ordered to pay costs.

Kami Kunaiti was convicted and fined £1 ancl costs for failing to cut blackberry on his land, ancl Netanc Anaru was convicted and fined £1 ancl costs for a similar offence.

P. Horne was also charged with failing to cut blackberry on his land. Defendant stated the department had agreed to allow him £looJor cutting, but had gone back on its* agreement. Defendant was allowed a month .to cut the patch in the open. Edward Goffe was charged with driving a motor-lorrv at an excessive speed on a main highway at Whale aid. Mr Chamberlain, for the County Council, said that it was the first case of its kind in the district and was brought a.s a warning by the Council. Defendant- pleaded guilty and was fined £1 and costs.

The annual meeting of the Wairoa Rugby Referees’ Association was held on Monday night, Mr M. Osborne presiding. The annual report and balance sheet- was read and adopted. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £3 on the year’s .working. The election of officers resulted as follows : President, Mr A. G. Nolan (reelected) ; vice-presidents, Messrs ,N. Law, j. Sven sen, J. Fribble, S. It. Standing and R. Uridge. New members were elected as follow: Messrs J. McGregor, J. Cook, T- A. Milne, A. Carson and.D. Sullivan.

THEATRE DESTR DYED. Everybody’s Theatre, North Clyde, was totally destroyed by fire early this morning. The fire was discovered at 3.30 and the fire brigade was quickly on the scene, but were unable to save anything, the fire increasing very quickly. The heat was intense and the hoses were turned' on the shops on the opposite side of the road which were beginning to scorch. Fortunately there is a vacant section on each side of the theatre, which prevented the fire from spreading. A number of people at the euchre tournament and dance, which was over at 12.30, had remarked on the smell of burning which pervaded the hall during the night.

Airs. Jack Ellisdon and children, formerly of Wairoa, are re-visiting the district, and are staying with her parents, Air. and Mrs. H. Grout. The winners of the euchre tournament held last night in Everybody’s Theatre were : -—-Ladies, Airs J. Reid 1, Airs Wilson 2, Mrs Aloffatt 3; gentlemen, fill- Loader 1, Air G. Buckingham 2, Air P. Ryan 3. The Scottish Society gave an open night to farewell Aliases Campbell and Cook, who are leaving for the South Island. An enjoyable evening was spent in cards and dancing. Airs Brownlie provided the music and Aliss Davys played an extra. The card winners were: Aliss Eoley and Airs Brownlie, Mr Boyd and Mr Redmond.
