POVERTY BAY UNION

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Rugby footballers gathered in the Farmers’ Union rooms last evening when the annual general meeting of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union was held. Mr A. S. Parker presided over a good attendance of delegates. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs G. Jeune and A. E. Billcliff.

A loss of £179 for the 1926 season was shown by the Union in the balance sheet submitted to delegates, this being principally due to expensive tours 'undertaken by the Poverty Bay senior representative team, the gate receipts for the Wairpa and East Coast matches at Gisborne not coming up. to expectations. The expenditure included advertising £9B, payment to Maori Advisory Board £179, rent £95, touring expenses for senior teams £230, touring expenses for juniors £92, expenses of visiting teams £154, honorariums £62, and a number of other substantial items. The income was mainly derived from the Saturday gate £2BO, representative match gates £465, Maori match takings £203, and grants from Auckland and Bay of Plenty respectively. The Auckland grant was £35 and the Bay of Plenty payment £42. The assets are .valued at £252 19s and comprise mainly sums owing by outside unions. The accumulated funds are reduced to £236, in comparison with £439 at the beginning of the year, one item included in the balane-sheet being accounts held •over from 1925. amounting to £23. ilin moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet (as already published) for the past season, Mr A. S. Parker referred to the main items contained therein and expressed the belief that, though their expenses had been heavy during the season it had been money well spent and they would reap the benefit; during the coming seasons. The report and balance-sheet were then adopted l unanimously. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patrons, Messrs A. B. Williams and J>. J. Barry; president, Mr H. B. Williams; vice-presidents, Hon. K. S. Williams, Messrs W. D. Lysnar, M.P., J. J. Martin, H. E. Maude, J. S. Wauchop, and M. J. Kyne; delegate to N.Z.R.U., Mr Edgar Wylie; vice-president N.Z.R.U., Mr W.. D. Lysnar, M.P.; boil, surgeons, Drs. Kahlenberg and Bowie; hon. treasurer, Mr G. Jeune; lion, secretary. Mr W. S., McKees hon. auditor, Ml* C. O. Hansen. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to write a letter of thanks to Mr C. O'. Hansen: for his services as honorary auditor. Mr M. 01 Kyne put in a plea, on behalf of the Wairoa, sub-union, that the coming Ranfurly Shield match between Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay be staged as an opening match on the new ground at Wairoa. Mi- A. S. Parker pointed out that the gate might suffer ■ and, in any event Hawke’s Bay were particular-, ly keen to play this game in Napier so that the playing. of the game at Wairoa was hardly possible. Mi- Burge suggested that as early a start should be mode to the season as possible in view of the nearness of the Ranfurlv Shield match.

'Mr Parker said that the competition would probably start on April 30. and delegates ,of the different clubs present;, stated" that this date would suit. their respective clubs. ; \ The meeting concluded; with votes of . .thanks to those - attending 5 the meeting.. to those - who had assisted at matches 'during,, the year, to . retiring officers, to the press, to the Farmers’s Union j '-'for use of looms, 1 and to the chair. DOMINIONS AND RUGBY TRIBUTE TO ALL BLACKS

April 6, 7.30. p.m.) LONDON, April 5, “It has always been a matter for regret that the- Rugby code was not universally adopted throughout the Dominions”, says Mr Alfred St. George Hamersley, writing in the Evening News. He participated in the first Anglo-Scottish international match ,and was originator of Rugby in Canterbury and Vancouver. He says that all who have seen the All Blacks realise Australia’s and Canada’s loss in not adopting Rugby. He recalls the first New Zealand match in 1874, played at Ashburton between North and South Canterbury, the players travelling fiftymiles fording rivers in coaches and returning that evening. (Mr Hamersley played for England in international R.ugby four times being captain of the English XV' in 1874. He also started the Rugby game in Canterbury, New Zealand, and Vancouver). &
