THE JUBILEE
PROTEST AGAL\ T ST RESTRICTION
* ‘MERELY RECOMMENDATION.”
A protest against the action of the executive committee organising the Gisborne and Cook County jubilee celebrations limiting the celebrations to one day, was received by the Borough Council last evening from the “Back to Gisborne” committee. The committee had already broadcast invitations throughout New Zealand inviting former citizens of Gisborne to visit their old town during the jubilee on May 11 and 12. This action was taken in accordance with the decision on March 18 that the jubilee was to be celebrated over three days, inclusive Children's Day on May 5. This committee maintains that the executive council lias no power to limit the celebrations to one day, and it was understood at the general meeting of March 18 that they were to arrange the programme over the period decided at that meeting. It is quite impossible for tlie committee to recall tlie invitations sent out, which are already distributed in all parts of New Zealand, and we cannot break faith with the invitationholders by providing them with anything less than what the invitations state". It is held that the visitors expected it in consequence of the extensive advertising already done, and would not come even if it were possible to amend the invitations to one day’s celebrations.—The Mayor pointed out Jhat the suggestion of a three days’ celebrations had been only a recommendation and the protest was received.
