NOTES AND NEWS. Nominations for all events at the Tolaga Bay Jockey Club’s meeting, to he held on Thursday, February 17, will close with the secretary (Mr E. Dodd) at 8 p.m. to-morrow. .".7. Acceptances tor the first day of the Gisborne Racing Club’s summer meeting close at 8 p.m. to-morrow with the secretary, Mr H. E. Dodd. A trotter that the best was not seen of at Hastings is Carbine Direct. He failed to leave the mark properly in the only race he started in, but when he did get going showed a fine turn of speed, though he was too far back to get near the leaders. To visit a racecourse nearly sixty years after.it has been laid out is an incident that does not happen in the life of every man and when it happens that that man was respondbie for obtaining the land from the Government for the newly formed Racing Club, the incident becomes more, interesting and carries with it many scenes that, alas! arc but memories. Such" was the lot of Mr. John Kebble who visited the Foxton races. ..In the days ol : the Provincial Governments he was successful in getting the Wellington Government to set aside - a piece of land for the Foxton Racing dub, and after going through many stages of improvements, the course is to-day recognised as one of the finest and most popular in the district.

Absurd lias n great record in the Wellington Stakes, bis progeny having won the race six times in the last seven years his successful representatives being Rational. Thespian, Motley, Lady Cavendish mul Limited, tlie last named a dual winner of the event.

Peter-Grattan is a promising young pacer. He is a big chap and there is a lot of room.for improvement in him. He should mature into a Very good sort indeed.—H.B. Herald. After four wins in succession counting a dead-heat, Lysander has had to be content with minor berths in his last two outings—the Great Northern Derby and Wellington Stakes. His winnings this season total £3137 10s while those of Commendation, who can he regarded-as the season’s best three-year-old, are £1637 10s. W. H. Atkins, of Greenmeadows, had a very green"," but promising young trott’qr at Hastings. This was Huia Maid: a 3-year-old filly by the well-known mare Holly Maid, dam of Holly Bell and many other good winners. When ready to show her best form Huia Maid should not lie the worst of the family.

During the Christmas holidays, the Kingseote Racing Club (South Australia) held a meeting, when something of a record was established by a trainer. Six events on the programme and of the 31 horses figuring on the race card, the whole lot bore the one trainer’s name—A. J. Turner. Presumably if all tlie horses in one stable were bracketed on the totalizator, as is done in the trotting events in the Dominion, a dividend would have been paid out on every horso that started during tlie day. According to figures published in the “New Zealand Referee,” En Route was not eligible for the race he won at the Ashburton meeting. The records show that he had won £BSO in flat races, so he should not have been allowed to run in any hack race. The rules say that no horse shall start in a hack race who has won more than £SOO in stakes, but nothing is laid down in the rules as to what should he done if a horse so ineligible actually starts and wins. Looking at the matter from a com-mon-sense point of view (says ‘Vedette”), it seems as if the owners or the horses who finished second and third" to En Route 'have a good case against the club. This is not xeij consoling to the backers of those horses who have now lost bevoud recall.
