Says a Wellington message: The Northumberland is Captain Charles S. Broughton’s first deep sea boat. Captain Broughton is the son of the late Captain Broughton. He was born in Auckland, is aged 38, and married with two children, all residing in London. He went to sea on a sailer 16 years ago, resigning a pursership on the Pateena and the .mraroa to do so. He served on a submarine during the war, and subsequently was appointed Marine Superintendent in London for the N.Z. Shipping Co. —P.A.
Miss Nina Murpliy, of Gisborne, who is a candidate in the First National New Zealand and Australian film beantv competition, received word from Auckland last evening that she has been selected to appear at the National and Lyric Theatres, commencing Thursday February 3 in the elimination tests. One girl • will he chosen from New Zealand - and one from each State in the Commonwealth, and the final adjudication will take place in Melbourne during the week commencing March 20' next, fine girl then chosen as winner will receive a ten-weeks’ contract with Cecil B. de Mille, the producer-direc-tor of “The Ten Commandments and “The Volga Boatman,” to appear in a leading part in at least one production, and, providing s^e -n veals the average talent, she Will, it so desirous, be offered a long contract Her salary for the ten weeks contract will he £2O per week, and all her expenses and those of her chaperon, to and from America,ewill he paid by the First National Co.
