COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING The C’oolc County Council’s monthly meeting, which was held yesterday, was attended by Messrs. .Chas. Matthews (chairman), J. Tombleson, M. T. Hall, F. B. Barker, J. E. Benson, N. Thomas, W. G. Sherratt, F. S. Bowen and T. Holden. On behalf of the majority of the ratepayers on the Parakanapa Road MV. J." N. Monckton wrote complaining that the maintenance work was not well in hand and also that a promise made to construct the Parakanapa deviation had not been fulfilled.—The. Engineer stated that the wet weather had held the work up but a start would be made on the deviation within the next week. Permission to lease a blind road at Ormond was sought by Mr. Keenan.—The chairman stated that he had viewed the road in question and had given instructions to grant the required permission.—The chairman’s action was confirmed. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The County Engineer (Mr. J. J. Keane) submitted the following report on works undertaken during the month: — . 1 The formation or McGregor’s deviation shffws fair progress. The metalling of 30 chains of the Pipiwhalcaoa Road, Glencoe Settlement, is well advanced and will be completed at an early date. Co-operative contracts for widening Mangapoikc Road are completed. Owing to the bad weather experienced during the early part of the month, the carting of metal on the Mangapoike Road was considerably delayed, but good progress is now being made. Knapping and rolling of metal is also being carried out on this road. The carting of metal on the NgatapaWharekopae Road was also delayed by tlie bad weather, but is now pioceeding steadily. Carting metal for the Opoutama Road: A tender has been accepted for this work. Three contractors have been engaged with lorries “as weather permitted ’ cartinn- metal on the Hangaroa-Tahora Road. Gangs of men have also been engaged knapping the stone. Cooperative contractors are now engag-. ed widening portions of the GisborneNVaimata Road. The deviation near Te Pani on the same road has been metalled. The metalling on Panikau Road has been completed, the work having been done with the Council’s lorries.

—Maintenance. —

Minor repairs were effected to a few of the bridges and culverts on the Flats. Two lorries were engaged part-time carting gravel for repairs m the Gisborne, Taruheru, Wliataupoko, Patutahi and YVaingake Ridings. Maintenance on the back roads was considerably reduced during the month as several of the surfacemen were engaged on loan and grant works. One tractor-grader is rt work on the Hangaroa-Tahora Road, one on tlie Parakanapa Road. The roads generally are in fair condition -The report was adopted.
