COUNTY BRIDGES

INSPECTION OF STEEL STRUCTURES. MINOR REPAIRS REQUIRED. Steel bridges in the Cook County were recently inspected by the County Engineer (Mr. J. J. with a view to ascertaining their cmi'liDon and probable lite and be submitted to the Council yesterday the following report on his examination. The bridge at Martin’s mossing, painting, before the coming winter, lout apart from this the v Jiole oi tilt steel superstructure is in good condition. The other steel bridges at Waimata, viz., Horoeke, jxenway’s and McDonald’s are all in good condition, but will require scraping, and painting within the next 12 months. The lattice work on the sides of the bridges has become Dadly pitted in places, but this, does not affect the strength of the bridge, being cniy used as a hand-railing. The Matawhero bridge is also in good condition but will require to be painted before next summer. The steel bridge on the old Pakarae road, near the sea coast is deteriorating rapidly j this is. due to the effect of tne salt spray. The bridge was repaired and painted' about two years ago, when several of the lighter parts ol the steel work had to be renewed. This bridge will require to be scraped and painted at an early date.

Robert’s mad, Te Arai: The position in regard to this road, is as follows:—The legal road runs in a straight line from the main Morere road, to the river, about 20' chains of the road is formed and metalled. At the end of the metalled section a lane which is partly formed, but which is not on the surveyed line has been in use by the natives for many years. When inspecting, the road a few days ago I was informed that all the sections had frontage on to the lane, and that if the road was opened up on the correct line, the settlers’ concerned would have an access to same. On an inspection of the plan at the Lands Office this statement was verified. Under the circumstances I would recommend that the unused portion of the legal road be closed, and the lane at present in use be legalised. Watson’s Foot-bridge, "Waimata: I have ffone into the matter of the proposed foot-bridge for Messrs W atson and Jones, Waimata,' in lieu of the concrete crossing for which £2UU was provided in the lean proposals, and have to report, that a light suspension bridge, suitable for pedestrians. can lie erected for the money available. The report was adopted and it was also decided to take steps to legalise the present road used by the natives.
