OUTBREAK AT TE KUITI e

TE KUITI, Jan. 21. Two shops occupied by Airs M. Gascogne, restaurant keeper, and A. G. Mercer, tobacconist, were almost completely destroyed by fire at four o’clock this morning. A boarder sleeping in a detached building at the bac-k of the restaurant noticed the fire and gave the alarm. The fire had a good hold on the buildings, winch, being old ' and very dry burnt fiercely. The upper storey of the building next door, occupied by A. AV T . Delly, confectioner, was scorched, but the efforts of tlie brigade and the absence of wind prevented the spread of the fire.

AlercerG stock was insured in the National office for £425 and is a total loss; also Gascogne’s furniture and effects in the State office, £.450. in addition, All's Gascogne lost £IOO in cash, which was kept on the premises. She had a narrow escape in her night attire. The buildings, which Were reduced to a charred shell, were'owned by E. Gough, builder. The insurances are not available. — P.A.

SEVEN-ROOAIED HOUSE GUTTED AVAIFUKURAU, Jan. 21. About 3 a.m to-dhy a sevenroomed dwelling occupied by Airs AI. AVall and private boarders was completely gutted. The brigade were promptly on the scene, but little of the contents was saved. It is thought the fire originated in the diningroom. The building was owned hy the trustees in th estate of the late Rupuha Te Hianga. The house was worth about £I2OO, and was insured in the State office for £BSO. The insurance on the furniture is not available.—D.A. FOUR-ROOMED HOUSE GUTTED. TAUAIARUNUI, Jan. 21. A fire last night destroyed a fourroomed residence and outbuildings owned and occupied by A. Venn and A. Laidvale. No water was available and the brigade could do nothing. The cause of the fire is unknown. The insurances on the house are £3OO in the State office, and on the furniture £2OO in the Southern Union office. —P.A.

SEVEN-ROOAIED HOUSE BURNED LEVIN, Jan. 21. A fire occurred to-day by which a seven-roomed house owned hv Air John Ryder and occupied by Air Clias Redfern, was destroyed with the contents. Mr Redfern, with liis family, went to Foxton in the morning, and there was no one in the house when the fire broke out. When discovered, the flames had a good hold, and it was impossible to save any of the contents. The owner and the lessee were both absent from town. The insurances are not available. —P.A.
