“THE GONDOLIERS” TO-NIGHT
At the Opera House this evening J. C. Williamson. Ltd., will present their brilliant and now famous Gilherb and Sullivan Comic Opera Com-/
pany in a brilliant production of tha exquisite and highly amusing comic opera “The Gondoliers,” winch will be presented with new and mag nib cent costumes and with scenery ly contly painted for the Melbourne y/ rival by Mr W. S. Coleman., Seats in central positions may be selected at Tattersall and Layly’s or they may be procured at the doors this evening. “The Gondoliers" can only be staged for one night and to-rnor-rew evening “The Yeomen of the Guard” will be revived. On Saturday (afternoon a*nd evening) "Ibe Pirates of Penzance” will be staged and on Monday night “The Mikado’ will be presented. On Tuesday evening the company will stage “lolanthe” and the season will close on Wednesday evening. when “H.M.S. Pinafore,” preceded by “Trial ov .Jury” .wilj.'be performed. Playgoers will be glad to welcome the re-appearance here of that brilliant comedian Charles A. Walenn. whose best characterisation is undoubtedly that of the Duke of Plazai Toro. James' Hay has on former occasions delighted patrons with Ins acting and singing in tht character of Marco 'in “The Gondoliers.” " His singing of “Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes” created a furore in Melbourne and Auckland recently. Strefla Wilson, who is said to be the finest comic opera soprano the Australian stage has known for some years, will make her first appearance here this evening in the singing part of Lasilda. John Ha Is ton, a noted and popular- artist, will appear as Don Alhambra, and Leo Darnton, famous English tenor, will appear as Luiz. Winifred Williaitison, who will make her debut this evening as the Duchess of Plaza Toro, was until recently a orincipal member of the English Gilbert and Sullivan Company. J/atti llussell will appear as Uianetta, Mabel Gibson as Tessa, Effie Armstrong as Inez, and. Gordon Pamsay as Antonio. A feature of all the productions 'will be the chorus and orchestra, which are under the baton of Gustave Slanoiiski. The operas were staged- under the personal supervision of Minnie Everett and Dic-k Shortland is the stage manager.
