BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING

The fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council, held on Tuesday nipi’it, was attended by the Mayor (Mr G. Wildish) and Crs H. H. DeCosta, H. E. Maude, J. N. Bullard, T. E. Toneycliff'e, C. E. Bickford, D. IV. Coleman, J. Blair, T. Todd and L. T. Burnard. Tli Harbor Board advised that the acceptance of the Warren Engineering Company's tender for the supply of cast iron pipes had been approved. Regarding contracts let by the Council in connection with the new Kaiti Esplanade roadway the Board suggested that the Council only deal with the contractors, the Board being prepared to make payments on receipt of the Borough Engineer’s certificates.—Tlie letter was received. The Sawmillers’ Federation wrote urging that the Council should give preference to New Zealand timber over the imported article. —It was decided on the motion of the Mayor to support the request. An application for permission to erect a kerbside petrol pump in front of their premises received from Sim and McAra was granted, subject to the Engineer’s approval. An application from E. Iv. Bricily for a motor omnibus driver’s license was granted. The New Zealand Civil Engineers’ Association wrote asking the Borough Council to allow their engineer to attend the conference in March.—lt was decided to comply with the request.

A request received from Webb Bros, for a permit to remove .six houses from tne eld Taruheru works site to Chalmers Road was referred „o the Works Committee for investigation with power to act. The request of the Coverty Bay Power Board that the policy of the Council he defined as to the width of the footpath and treatment of. the large open drain in upper Gladstone Road, received consideration bv the Works Committee, when it was decided that the Council were not at present in a position to define a policy in regard to this matter, but the committee consider that it will be some years before tlie grass strip alongside the water channel will he interfered with and it is a matter entirely for the Board to decide as to which line they will erect their poles upon. The Council could under no consideration accept any responsibility in the event of the Board electing to erect their line on tlie 21 foot mark from building alignment.—Tlie report was adopted. The Works Committee reported that no doubt the Council is aware the local authorities of the No. 4 Main Highways District appointed the Cook Comity Council the eontrolling authority in respect to heavy traffic, and The collection and distribution of fees collected therewith, and in respect to last year it was agreed that the basis of distribution should he on the amount of money expended .on street maintenance whilst for the current year no basis lias been agreed upon. Although no fault of the Cook County so far no adjustment of fees has been made, and the committee would suggest that a conference of the local bodies of the Gisnorne highway district be called to discuss these matters- and arrange for the distribution of the fees as required by the Act and iegulations issued thereunder.—The report was adopted. , The Borough Engineer, reporting on the waterworks service, stated that two new services were laid during the fortnight, one at McDonald Street and oiie at Derby Street. Jnc gauge readings were: Highest uo Tbs, lowest 501bs. For the school baths 80-1.000 gallons have boon supplied free of charge. _ The men had been engaged in repairing water iittings and meters, laying services, i impairing syphon at Stanley lid. pumping station, installing meters and in general repairs. The top hue had been maintained in working , order. There were two leaks during the fortnight, both at McLaughlin’s cutting. The amount of water that passed through the meter for the weeks ending November 15 and November 22 was 591,000 and 7,060,000 gallons respectively.
