CATHEDRAL WANTED

ARCHBISHOP’S PIEA FOR AUCKLAND.

SITE PURCHASED BY SELWY-N 84 YEARS AGO.

(Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 14

The fact that Auckland is the most backward of all New Zealand Anglican dioceses in regard to provision of a permanent Cathedral, was referred to by Archbishop Averill in his presidential charge- to Synod to-day. The Archbishop said it is now over 84 years since Bishop Selwyn purchased what Is known as the cathedral site at Parnell, and yet no. steps have been taken to erect a permanent cathedral thereon, nor has any real effort been made to raise funds for the purpose. It was pointed out by the speaker that the diocese of Christchurch possessed a permanent finished cathedral, the diocese of Nelson was beginning to build a permanent cathedral, steps were being taken by the Wellington diocese to erect a permanent structure, while a permanent and beautiful cathedral was possessed by the diocese of Waiapii. ~ “What about Auckland, the mother diocese of the province, containing as it does such historic associations, and such sacred memories of Bishop Selwyn Dr. Averill asked this question as preliminary to- a refei’ence to the” wish and intention of Bishop Selwyn to see a cathedral built on the cathedral site at Parnell. His Grace said that in view, of the approaching centenary of the first and only Bishop of New Zealand, he intended with the concurrence of Synod, to appoint a commission to consider the question. “I fully realise,” said the Primate, “that many of us cannot hope to see a stately cathedral arising on the site acquired by Bishop Selwyn, but if we could make some further provision for the fulfilment of ours and Bishop S'ehvyn’s hopes, and hand on to our successors the solemn duty of commencing the work as soon as possible, at the time of the Selwyn centenary in 1942 preferably, we should at least have the satisfaction of feelim:: that we had clone something ton aids the realisation cf the visions -and ideals '•e out gloat Bishop.
