QUEENSLAND FINANCE

BRISBANE, Oct. 13

The Auditor-General’s report shows that receipts from State taxation last year equalled £4 15s 4d per head of the population, compared with £2 2s 9d m 1915-16, and* interest on the public debt in the same period increased from £4 4s 7d per head to £5 6s 4d. 111 the Assembly the Government introduced a Bill increasing the cheque duty by 100 per cent to 2d. It is estimated that this will yield £50,000 annually.

HISTORIC OMNIBUS AS FUNERAL MOURNER;

LONDON, Oct. 12

“Old Bill,” a general omnibus, which served with the “Old Oontemptibles,” was a mourner at Forest Hill cemetery when Samuel Downing, who drove the ’bus at Amiens was buried. Nine coffin-bearers drove m “Old Bill,” which was loaded with wreaths, and accompanied the coffin to the trraveside.
