NEW ZEALAND APPLES
VAR XING PRICES IN ENGLAND. KENNY EACH "ON BARROW: Kkl A POUND IN. CITY. WHERE DOES GROWER COME IN? , (Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Oct, 12. An interesting comment regarding tlie marketing and sale of New Zealand apples in England is furnished by the’ “New Zealand Herald’s” Loiw don correspondent, wlio says:—, “When Mr H. Valder, of Hamilton, was walking along the Strand recently lie happened upon a costermonger who had on his harrow a case of New Zealand Sturmers, which he was offering at one penny a piece. They looked excellent, so Mr Valder bought some, marvelling that the apples could be sold in London at a penny when the New Zealand retail price would be perhaps 2d for the same fruit. A case of beautiful Sturmers was purchased by Mr Valder. The pride was 10s, plus 2s for delivery. Only two apples were damaged. The rest of the fruit ..was in prime condition, and of uniform size, 2|in. At a certain London, store similar apples were being sold at lOd per lb. Mr Valder asks where did the grower come ini' - if the street vendor could sell a case for lbs he probably had l unicl several shillings less for it, The correspondent says some firstclass Stunners from New Zealand, by the way, were sold the other day at Oswestry Market Hall at 6d per lb., perfect fruit, each apple separately wrapped. North Wales people are very keen to have Now Zealand fruit, ami. stallholders say that people again and again ask for it.
