SHIP’S FIREMEN SENT TO GAOL

AUCKLAND, April 13. Two firemen on the steamer Kaikori, George Norman Godfrey, aged 25 years, and Sydney Oils, aged 38 years, pleaded guilty in the Police Court to-day to embezzling l six cases of wir.e, valued at £2O, while the vessel was on her way from Adelaide to Auckland-. Chief Detective -Cummings said the accused took the cases from the hold to their quarters, and when they drank the wine threw the bottles out of the portholes. Nine cases were missing altogether, but the other three <ould not be traced.

The Magistrate (Mr. Hunt) ordered accused to make restitution of the value of the wine and sentenced each man to 14 days’ imprisonment.—P.A.
