MOTOR FATALITY

MAORI PUNNED UNDER CAR r AND DROWNED-. NELSON, Jan. 31. A motoring fatality occurred on the R oeks Road, late on Saturday evening. Reuben Stevens, an adult Maori from the Maori Pa, the driver of the car, was slightly injured, and Mason Bailey, a Maori, married, aged 19, was drowned. After rounding Magazine Point on the Rocks Road, the car swerved to the cliff side of the road, then headed almost straight for the sea wall, breaking the guard chains on the wall and. falling nose first on the sea and ttpA.Pocks below about six. feet. The car struck head first, then turned’ over with the head facing the shore. , Alason Bailey was pinned underneath and drowned. Stevens is suffering slight injuries and from cold and exposure it is feared complications may set in.. Two boys, Jack Francis Heath and Arthur Neville Pleath, who were also in the car, escaped almost uninjured. -P.A.
