TWO' RECORDS SMASHED. N.Z CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUDED. SENSATIONAL RACE IN 100 YARDS BOYS’ INTERMEDIATE (Special to the < ‘Time>”A • NAPIER, Iran. 29. One of the most successful New Zealand championship meetings ever held was brought to a conclusion tonight when the Municipal Bath was again packed to its utmost capacity. The weather was gloriously fine, a sultry night being tempered with a cooling sea , breeze. .. • . The opening event of the night, til© 440yds championship, saw five starters. Pelham touched first at the end of the first hundred yards, followed by Enwright and Baird Pelham increased his lead before the end' of the second hundred yards was reached and had a lead at that distance of four yards from Enwright, with Lindsay next. In the swim over the third hundred yards, Pelham drew out and touched two yard’s ahead of Baird, with Lindsay close up. At this stage, Enwright pulled out. Soon after commencing the fourth, hundred Baird drew level with' Pelham, and Lindsay closed up on the leaders. Pelham was soon outclassed and B.dird' and Lindsay fought out a. great race. Bail'd, at 400yds, was leading by a yard. In the last full length Baird increased his advantage and finished three yards ahead of Lindsay, with Pelham twenty yards behind, third. The winner s time, smin 30 4-sscc, beat the New Zealand record by 7 4-Gsec, while Lindsay also broke the N.Z. recoid. The first hundred yards was covered in 66 4-ssec, the second in 2min 22 4 -o sec, the third in 3min 41sec and the fourth in smin 3sec. There were four starters in the 440yds N.Z. Ladies’ Championship. At the end of the first hundred yards, Miss Bell led Miss Stoeldey by a yard, with Miss Page a few inches back, and Miss Copplestonc two yards behind. When the 200 yards mark was reached 31iss Bell touched ahead ox Miss Page, with Miss Stockley a touch behind, and Miss Copplestonc ten. yards further back. Before three hundred yards were covered, Miss Page took" the lead and touched two yards ahead of Miss Bell, with Miss Stockley six yards hack. From thence on the result was never in doubt. Miss Page gradually gaining and leading by three yards at four hundred. In the final lap she easily maintained her superiority and won by four yards from Miss Bell, with Miss Stockley twenty-five yards bad, third. The first hundred yards was covered in 79scc, the second in 2min 48sec, the third in 4min 16 2-ssec and the fourth in smin 45sec. Wellington had a good win in the hundred yards Intermediate Boys’ Championship, which was one ot the most sensational races of the evening, for, from the time the competitors left the mark it was seen that the record would be broken. Cameron touched at the end of the first length a. yard in advance, but on the second time up the bath Bridson drew, near the leader and only a touch separated them. The final length was a great exhibition, but Cameron gave his opponent no chance and, in a sensational finish won by two yards, with Fitch third, a similar distance away. The time, 61scc, established a new record, Bowsett’s record being beaten by one fifth of a second. The pick of New Zealand’s sprint cracks competed in a 66 2-3 yards scratch invitation race which was won after an exciting contest by Dowsett, who, despite the tact that Fairgraj touched practically with him on the first length, scored a two yards victory in 35 4-sscc, with Meiklo about a yard back. .. . The final stage of the lauies’ diving was again a better exliioition than that given by the male performers. All the competitors gave a good display, the whole performance being ot a high standard. The winner, Myrtle Foote, picked up most points in an Isander headed from the low board, which she executed perfectly. The carnival concluded with cheers for the Hawke’s Bay Centre, the Hawke’s Bay chairman (Mr. J. Mason), and the secretary (Mr. 11. B. Le Bas), followed by cheers for the visitors.

WAIROA SPORTS The first carnival of the rc-7ormed Wairoa Ewimming Club took place 111 the river on Saturday, in fine weather and in tTie presence of a good attendance. In addition to handicap events and dives a large number of novelty events were put on. the most sucessful being the awkward dive, which was won -by Allsupp. Several promising swimmers were seen in the water, the most promising undoubtedly Hieing Miss Irina Wilson and Haughton. During the afternoon a number of boys’ and firls’ races were run and caused considerable interest. A lakes’ race across the river (about 200 yards) was won by Miss Irma Wilson with Miss Sainsbuhy second. In a men’s race over Hie same course R>. Richardson (Olympic) - won, Haughton being second. There were'l'ourteen competitors in tho diving coyest, the greatest number of points being awarded to Williamson, with Haughton second. The 63 2-3, yards handicap resulted in a surprise, Haughton from scratch defeating Richardson 2sec. A relay race was won by a team from Gisborne consisting of Richardson, Corbett, Murphy and Maginnity. Yesterday morning the Olympic rtfel team gave' a land and water exhibition which created keen interst.
