HUGE BUSH FIRES
THREAT AGAINST CANBERRA VOLUNTEERS RUSH TO THE SCENE. (Received Jan. 28, 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 28. Huge bush fires are raging beyond Murrumbidgee. A strong wind is driving the flames towards the confluence of the Cotter and Murrumbidgee rivers, and if the fire crosses the river, the bush around the Cotter dam and the great pine plantations on Mount Stromlo will be in grave danger. Canberra will be threatened. Volunteers from Canberra have been rushed to the soene of the outbreak. Fires are also raging in the Bathurst district, causing heavy damage. MELBOURNE, Jan. 2S. •Eush fires in the Eastern ranges are causing extensive damage and residents are fleeing before the flames. —U.P.A. (Received Jan. 29, 12.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 28. The bush fire has now passed Murrumbidgee and is approaching the northwest slopes of Mount Stromlo on the slopes of which are pine plantations costing huge sums and topreserve which the Commonwealth observatory men are being gathered from all parts of the district and are being rushed to the scene.
