Visitors arriving in Gisborne, at present the guests of the Gisborne Hotel, are as follows: Messrs Carroll, s Joss, Yates, M. Murphy (Wanganui.;. Mullans (Coast), Mrs. White and daughter (Dunedin), Messrs Mt Gregor ( Wellington'', Robertson (Auckland), Barr (Napier). The following visitors to Gisborne who arrived in town yesterday, are at present staying at the Masonic Hotel: Messrs C. H. P. Moline (New Plymouth), S. B. Dodge (Auckland), A. G. Don (Auckland), M. McDonald (Te Karaka), Lloyd Hahn (C.S.A.). Jackson Scholz (U.S.A.).
A cable has been received from the secretary of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London, advising that John Davidson and Eoin P. Garden have been successful in the examination they sat for in October last. This was the first examination held in New Zealand by the institution. Garden sat for the whole and Davidson for part of the examination for associate membership. Eight students in Auckland sat for studentship examination. Garden is. therefore, the first to pass the complete examination for associate membership in New Zealand. Both Dunedin students received their technical training in the ELing Edward Technical College. The institution comprises the most prominent mechanical engineers in practice in Great Britain. Commissioner and Mrs. Lamb, of the Salvation Army, paid a visit yesterday to Flock House in continuume of their tour of the North Island, investigating immigration prospects. The Commissioner was greatly^.hjL pressed _ with the magnificent "Kostei. The visitors showed keen personal interest in the lads in residence, whom they addressed, exhorting them to remember the heritage left by their fatliers, who fought on the sea lor Britain. They appealed to the hoys to “fight the good fight.” In the course of an interview-" the Commissioner said that the key to the immigration question was here and r.ot in England, because it depended upon the power of the Dominions to absorb new-, settlers, not on -economic and social questions in the Homeland. He expressed himself hopeful that the visit would he fruitful.—P.A.
