SALE OF MEAT WORKS
RORTHWIOK’S OFFER TO WELLINGTON COMPANY.' CIRCUMSTANCES DIFFER FROM j POVERTY RAY. GOVERNMENT 1 REFUSAL ANTI-’ ■ coated. -- ; ; WELLINGTON, Jan.'22. v The Government will, .very soon now fcome to a decision regarding the offer of the Borthwick firm to purchase, ■the works of the Wellington Meat Ex-, port Company, which has not been successful. The circumstances are different from those at Gisborne. In this case the Company itself wants to sell to a big overseas firm. Another point of difference as compared with the Gisboffne case is that in the latter case the purchasing Company (Vesteys) was prepared, to, and did surrender, a license alvdrtdy held in the same district in order to buy the Poverty Bay Farmers Meat Company's license and works'. Thus, if Borthwicks are allowed to buy the Wellington works it will mean the securing of an extra license in New Zealand by a large overseas firm already established here. It is practically certain that the Meat Board will refuse to grant on extra license to Borthwicks, and therefore that the proposed sale will not take place.—Special.
