PTJKEKOHE, Jan. 4. The South-bound! express ran into a cream cart at a level crossing at Paerata this morning. The horse was killed and the cart smashed. The driver of the cart, Fred Hughes, escaped.—P.A.

NELSON, Jan. 4

During the holidays Mr. M. Rodgers, of Appleby, who recently retired from the teaching profession, had a narrow escape from being gored to death by a Jersey bull. He was attacked without warning and knocked down, but fortunately managed to escape, liis only injuries being a broken rib and severe bruises. The bull had teen dehorned, and had stumps about three inches long. But for thrt the consequnees to Mr. Rogers would have been much more serious.— Press Assn.

Oscar Quit (20), who resides in Gaversiiam, was admitted to hospital on Saturday afternoon suffering from injuries to the spine received whilst diving. He is progressing favorably.— P.A.

Airs. Ivy Killip, of Belleknowes, was admitted to hospital yesterday suffering from lacerated wounds to the head. It is stated that the injured woman was driving a motor-car near Taieri .Mouth when the car skidded, throning her heavily on to the' read. The' hospital authorities report that her condition is not serious.— Press Assn.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 4. Michael Callaghan, aged .fifty, stable-keeper, collapsed suddenly while sitting in a bed talking to _ a friend last evening, and died immediately. Deceased was a wellknown identity. An inquest will be held later.—P.A.
