GISBORNE CITY BAND
VISIT TO COAST
To play almost continuously from 10 a.m... until 1.36 the next morning was a record put up by tlie Gisborne City Band during the New Year holidays. Under Bandmaster P. Murphy the band left Gisborne on Thursday afternoon last per the Gisborne Alotor Service and travelled thiougfi to Euatoria, playing a number of selections at the local picture theatre in the evening, and also supplying the music for a. short dance arranged to .see the New Year in. The band went on to AYaimatatini next day ana experienced one of the hardest days in the histoiy of the local bandsmen, playing almost continuously at the sports and then again at a dance in the evening. At Waiomatatini members were entertained by the Hon. AT. Ngata ar.d Airs. Ngata, and family in a most hospitable manner, and were the guests of Air. Ngata for the night.
On the homeward journey a short concert was given at Tokomaru Bay, but owing to rain the band did not stop at Tolaga Bay. The journey between Tolaga ancl Wiiangara was a most unenviable one, at one part of the road the car being stuck in the mud for threequarters of an hour, and on many occasions the bandsmen had to get out in the mud and push, presenting a most bedraggled appearance when they arrived in town at 10 o’clock in the evening. General satisfaction was expressed by the .Landsmen a.t the manner in which the driver, Mr. H'.“ Nunns, who is also a member of the bund, handled the ear.
