A London cable announces the death of Mr. George Herbert Main C.M.G., Assistant Director on the League of Nations Secretariat since 1019.—A. and N.Z.C.A.

Mr. J. Me Ivor, who has been connected with the. local office of the Inspector of Factories for the lastfew months, leaves for Christchurch on January 13. where he will take over the office of Inspector of Weights and Measures.

The wedding took place in Holy Trinity Church. Avonside, Christchurch, of Mr. Gregory Warren Russell, eldest son of Hon. G. W. Russell and the late Mrs. Russell, to Miss Alice Baxter, daughter of Mrs. B. M. Baxter, and niece cf Mr. G. T. Mason, of Wellington.

Sir Douglas Maws on arrived in Auckland from Sydney by tho Maunganui yesterday. He'will investigate the forestry prospects ill the Dominion. Sir Herbert Matthews, an English agricultural expert, also arrived on a forestry mission. He is acting as trustee for several English busi-ness-men.—P.A.

The Hon. J. Roberts, X.Z. Commissioner at Wembley, who returned to Wellington by the Tahiti; considers New Zealand will benefit by the money spent there. The Exhibition had produced a wave of Empire shopping and had brought the Empire home to millions to whom previously it was only a name. X.Z. stood high in general estimation and this was almost entirely due, in his opinion, to the splendid conduct of our soldiers at Home.—P.A.

Sir Henry Francis Wigram. of Christchurch, ay ho was created ;v Knight Bachelor last Aveek, avus born in London in 1857, and Avas the first Mayor- of Greater Christchurch. He was appointed to the Upper House in 1908 pud resigned in 1923 for health reasons. He- Avas the founder of the Canterbury Seed Company, Avas a director of the Lyttelton Times for 30 years, and a director of many other companies. Sir Henry Wigram was the first president of the Canterbury Automobile Association and. established the Canterbury Aviation Company, Avhich trained ISO pilots for service iii the A\ r ar. The aerodrome at Sockburn has since been acquired by the GoA'ernment as an aA r iation base' and named Wigram Aerodrome.
