AUCKLAND, Jan. 2. The last day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting coinmiTneed tliis morning in excellent weather. There was another very largo attendance and the track was in good order. The Grandstand Handicap was won after a good race by Barometer, with Gala Day second. The proceedings commenced with the Grey Handicap. Horomea, who had run second to Star Stranger in the Queen’s Plate on the first day, was about £l5O Letter backed than My Hobby, while there was good support for Diogenes and Dal Eaton. The race resulted in a surprise, for the iittlc-famied Holymond got homo and paid a very long price. Dal Eaton was the early leader from Chairman, Appelumt, Diogenes and Horomea. Waltzer had run up third as the field crossed the top, and the order was much the same into the straight. At the distance the leaders tired. Holymond and My Hobby then appeared on the scene and in a good finish l-lolymoricl got the decision by half a length from My Hobby, who beat Diogenes by a neck Brushwood Boy, Archcno, Curraghmore, Mint Leal and Horomea were next. 'Hie wina»x is a half-sister to Absurdum and tins is her first victory. Only four contested the Sylvia Handicap. .Kiosk was over £lrtX>' better supported than Tea Bell, while Seatown and Threadneedle were selected in that order. The race galls for little description for, after Tea Bell had hopped out smartly, Threadneedle took charge at the cutting, and was never afterwards headed, winning by a length from Sea town, who lUgshcci fast and beat Kiosk for second place by a head. Tea Bell, who was under the whip in the straight, was last. Threadneedle had a couple of starts at Wood vide and finished second to Joy lying on the concluding day. He was brought north, hut went amiss, and this °vas his first start at the meeting. The son of Mr. D. J. Barry’s sire, Autumn, is owned in Gisborne and gives promise of turning out a pretty useful sort. ' Town Bank and Sun Up failed to keep their engagements in the Grandstand Handicap. Star Stranger carried over £9OO more than Royal Divorce, while Gala Day was next fancied. Another surprise was in store lor Barometer, tenth in order of fancy, proved the winner. Gala Day was the leader for most of the way. Going past the stewards’ stand, he was attended by Surveyor, Attractive and Siaosi, 1> it along the tack Siaosi, Attractive and Star Stranger were Ins nearest attendants. Gala Day held his position across the top from Siaosi, Attractive, Barometer, Royal Divorce, Surveyor and Transformer. -Gala Day was the first to turn for home, with Barometer, Transformer, Siaosi, Royal Divorce and Desert Glow next. lin the run to the post Barometer won by half a length from Gala Day, with Royal Divorce a length away third. Desert Glow, Star Stranger. T’ansfoimer, Siaosi, Spoony and Passionate were next. The Auckland Hurdle Race saw all the acceptors go to the post. Peter Maxwell, which is in the si;mo stable as Raw a and Prince Rufus, winners of the hurdle races on the second and third lie.vs, was about £3OO better hacked than Merry Singer, with Sir Fanciful next in demand. Pendennis went to the front at the start, the second hurdle bringing Lucullent and Peter A mans to grief. Pendennis led past the stands from Kendal Black Cruise", Peter Maxwell and King's Guard. Black Cruiser joined Pendennis along the back and the pail* wei e attended by King’s Guard, KontlaJ, and Merrv Singer. Pendennis and Black Cruiser led into the straight, where the latter drewi out to heat Merry Singer by two lengths and nhnlf. " King’s Guard was a length and a-half awav third, with Pendennis, Kendal Bright Light, Sir Fanciful and Miss Melva next. Peter Maxwell oi last. Only five went to the post for the Royal' Stakes.” Commendation carried more than three times as much as Bysander, with Autom.no next in request. Commendation, which drew the inside? position, was slow to move. Royal Tea was first to show out, hut, across the top, Jov Iving was in front, with Lysander, Royal Tea, A.utomne ~a>nd r CeipinendHiomU^ li* -v- ‘ ‘ r.t."T V ■

was iirst into the straight from Lysander and Automne, who were to-o-ether, while Commendation was still last. Joy King w’ent on to win by two lengths from Automne, which beat Commendation by three-quarters of a length Lysander fourth. Only three paraded for the Clifford Plate. Rapine was more than twice as well backed as Count Cavour. The latter hopped out in front, followed by Rapine and Town Bank. The order was the same throughout. Rapine got within half- a length of Count Cavour, but the latter was about a length in front entering the straight. Ranine then challenged, hut Count Cavour held his own to win nicely by a length. Town Bank was two lengths away third. The race was run off at a very slow pace. The* Bowen Handicap, with which the meeting concluded, was a great betting race, over £20,000 going through the machine. York Abbey was favorite, carrying over £OOO more than Tukia, while Hipo, C'awnpore, Black Cat, Civility, The Lamb and Sun Up, which were supported in that order, had over £ISOO invested on oacli of their chances. Sun Up was in front across the top and led into the straight from Day Guard and Tukia. 'The last-named 1 ran to the front at the distance and won by threequarters of a length from Da> Guard, which beat Master Doon by a head. The Lamb, Civility, Black Oat and Sun Up were next. TWO CLEAR- LENGTHS. One of the rules governing the light harness sport is that no rider or driv er shall cross from right to left or left to right in a race unless lie is two clear lengths ahead of the horse immediately behind him. In a saddle race two lengths means the length • the horse and another clear length, but in a harness .event it means the length of the horse and a sulky twice, so it beyond question that a competitor must be well clear before he can cross in front of another competitor. The rule is a good one, but is not greatly honored and at each meeting to see drivers crossing to the rails when the}' are barely a length in front. No doubt they all do it, but that doesn’t make it right and if ti stewards of clubs took a little moi notice of the running and had a wor to say to those ignoring he rule such might do good.
