ORMOND SPORTS

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING

The Ormond Sports Club's annual meeting although held under adverse weather conditions on Saturday attracted larger attendance than was anticipated although it was not equal to the gathering of the previous year Throughout tho morning the sports were frequently interrupted by showers but in the afternoon the conditions moderated for some time and the sun shone brightly for practically the remainder of tho meeting. The showers, however, made the ground very slippery for the horse events and the athletic and cycling track was heavy for runners and treacherous for cycling. Tho meeting was an interesting one and keen competition was the order in all events. The sprint track, although on the heavy side, was in good order otherwise and was the scene of some really fine performances, parti-* cularly in the 100 yards handicap, in which P’alfcridge, the Poverty Bay sprint champion, gained the verdict in his last stride in the splendid time of 10 l-ssee., equalling his time of tho previous day when running against Tracy, of Wellington, at Te Karaka. He also won the 220 yards in most convincing style, proving that 110 is still Pbverty Bay’s best sprinter. Over the middle distances, a young runner, J. Smith, registered the best performances by annexing both tho 440 and 880 yards off smalJ marks in excellent style, his forceful and determined finishing greatly impressing the spectators. The cycling events, amateur and professional, were keenly contested and provided the spectators with interesting and exciting finishes. Anions; the amateurs the Algie Bros, and Benson were the best performers all three showing excellent form and riding with splendid judgment. Hamilton also showed good form in the two mile open event which he won easily.

In the horse competitions there were exceptionally large entries and remarkable keenness was evinced in all events. The jumping was of a high standard on account of the number of good hurdlers competing and in the hunters’ jump in which there were 25 entrants. Leo Fitzgerald’s Kaiser annexed the trophy by jumping in brilliant style.

The general conduct of the meeting was very good, and as usual much assistance was given by officials from the town clubs. The secretarial duties were capably carried out by Mr R. G. Downie.
