CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

SIXTH ROUND

DUNEDIN, Jan. 1. Play in the sixth round commenced on Thursday morning in the Allen Hall at the Otago University, and was witnessed bv a large number of snectators, including a fair sprinkling of ladies. The round resulted as under■ —Section A— Fenwick and Miller.—Fenwick won. C'ra ken thorp v. Barnes. —C’rakentliorp won. Dunlop v. Severne.—Scverne found lus locked up knight too great a handicap and eventually lost his game. E. E. Hicks v. Gyles.—On the 33rd move, Hicks won a little materially, but the positional advantage rested with his opponent, who played carefully in a long game ar.d won. Moir had the bye. —Section B.— Erskine v. Purdy.— Erskine established a strong centre and with a nasty double threat broke Purdy’s position completely, and won. Pilil v. Davies. —Davies made a blunder in giving up an exchange, but Pilil failed to defend in an intricate position that followed and, consequently, had his first loss so far in tlie tourney. Anderson *v. Fairburn. —Middle game exchanges gave Anderson two passed pawns, which he carefully nursed and Fnirburn lost. Stenhouse v. E. A. Hicks. —In the middle game Stenhouse gained a superior position, which ho successfully pushed home. Kell ing had the bye.—P.A.
