CIVIC GUARDS AMBUSHED IN COUNTY CLARE

The wild and remote district of County Clare, where agrarian disputes and traffic in poteen between the mainland and the islands has caused the authorities considerable trouble, was the -scene of an attack on the civic guards patrol, who were ambushed late at night by their assailants who were armed with rifles and shot-guns. One guard was killed.
The entire district is being scoured by civic guards and armed detectives accompanied by troops equipped with machine guns.—Reuter.
