OVERSEA MAILS
DR. THACKER REPLIES TO
MR MAIiKMAN
CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 30. Dr. Thacker has replied to Mr Markman, repeating his declarations that mails to England are needlessly slow. He expresses astonishment that a responsible public servant should make such a mistake as to declare that their mail crossed the United States in 33 hours. The actual time, Dr. Thacker declares, is 48 hours. The trans-Pacific mail steamers might, he says, be speeded up to make the journey 4S hours faster. They would then connect with the air mail and with the fast Atlantic steamers which are available, giving a twenty-two days’ sendee to London for those ready to pay the express charge for urgent letters. Dr. Thacker repeats his former statement that the actual time taken by the mails in transit is much more than the official figures show and he instances letters posted by himself in London on December 8 to catch the Vancouver mail which took 42 days to reach Christchurch. —P.A.
