YOUNG MAORI WOMAN INDICTED. TE ARAI RIVER TRAGEDY SEQUEL. -
Tho capital charge of murder lias been laid against the young Maori woman, Pourewa. Alaru. aged 22, - as tlie result of the finding of a' body o> a new ly-born male Maori baby with a ra<>- tied tightly across the mouth and nostrils, floating in the Te Arai river on October 8. Since then the young woman allegedly the mother ot the child has been in hospital and on Saturday was arrested by Detective Ale? Leod. Later she appeared in tlio Police Court before All’. E. 0: Levvey, S AI. charged with the murder of her infant male child at Te Arai on October •?. • ’ Detective AlcLeod applied lor a remand until Friday, Oct. 30. Air D lies, representing tho accused. agreed to the remand, and av.ked that bail bo allowed, but. this was opposed-‘-by the - police. -The Alagistrate stated that lio never allowed,-bail in, a. capital case and would not'make an exception on this occasion. ’ , The remand would -be granted.,: j ” E;::-/:)
