NURMI’S AMBITION. Paavo Nurmi is credited with the ! intention of attempting to run twelve miles in under the hour, and thus beat the world’s record of 11 miles 1442 yards for an Hour set up by the late J. Bourn at Stockholm on July 6, 1913. Nurmi has something more than that to beat, though not “officially,” for W. G. George once ran twelve miles inside the hour in a trial at the Aston Lower Grounds, Birmingham, in 1886, just before he defeated W. Cummings on the same ground in their ten miles match _ for the championship of the world. The distance of the track was 501 yards, the respective mile marks were known and George’s records for both the mile and lap times are still in existence (writes Mr J. M. K. Lupton, of the London 'Athletic Club). George ; covered the ten miles in 49niin 29sec. ] and, running in splendid form, was ! told to keep going for the twelve | miles. He did so, and ran past the post in the wonderful time of 59min ■ 29sec. There were three watches on j the performance, and the late \V. Snook and others helped George on the journey.
