It was obvious from the amount of smoke that the fire was a- serious one. They immediately took all precautions to prevent the spread of the flames bv shutting off all draught. The exact time of the outbreak is unknown. As.far as could be determined the fire originated forward of the ’tween decks of No. 2 bold a.r.d gradually worked aft under the forward deckhouse until it was stopped by the bulkheads. These soon- got red hot, and ignited a quantity of stores in the stewards’ store room. Shortly .after nine o’clock this morning the fire seemed to be dying down but this was only temporary, as a short time later the outbreak was renewed. It was 11 o’clock when it was decided to berth tbo ship so as to enable the firemen to get at the flames with greater ease. As the vessel began to move the draught caused the flames to leap up above the. deck, but by redoubling their efforts the firemen were able to suppress this outbreak. A further detachment of firemen was awaiting the ship’s arrival and another hole was made in the port side of the vessel. The brigade’s Dennis pumping engine was then put to work while the fire float continued pumping on tlio starboard side.
