SAURDAY’S GAMES

The competition matches were continued on Saturday, some excellent games being witnessed.

LADIES’ COMPETITION

HIGH SCHOOL A BEAT KIA TOA

A good game was played between High School A and Kia Toa. School had the better of the first half, the score being then two goals to nil. The second half was slightly in favor of Kia Toa the game ending High School A 3 goals, KTa Toa 1. The best players for School were Misses B. Harris, Buscke, Reid, Eastwood, and Miller. For Kia Toa, Misses Hill McDiamard, Fauchelle, Mrs Woods and Mrs Forrester were the most prominent. Misses Langhorne and Phillips refereed.

ROVERS' DEFEAT HIGH SCHOOL

Rovers played a good game against High School B, spoiling the combination cf the School easy iu the match, the final result being a victory for Rovers by 4 goals to nil, the scorers being Misses F. White (2), M. Johnson and B. "Wither. Messrs Phillip and Langhorne were the referees.

MANUIOTKE B BEAT ROVERS B

Manutuke B proved altogether too good for Rovers B, winning by 5 goals scored by M. Nepi (2), T. Tiroti (2), and K. Nipi (1) to nil. Mr A. Cassin was referee.

MEN’S REPRESENTATIVE TEAM

, . (By “Has Been.”) The season lias now advanced to the time when Poverty Bay has to find its rep. players from both the ladies’ and men’s teams competing in its weekly competitions. I notice by a late paper that it is the intention of the Association to discuss the question whether or not they will withdraw their application for the New Zealand ladies’ tournament this year. In view of the lateness of the N.Z. Ladies’ Hockey Association deciding where it is to be held and the fact that Poverty Bay have several challenges for the Lady Carroll Shield, I cannot see it possible for them to cany on with the ladies’ annual tournament. I might mention also that the Haapu Rose Bowl and KeraKera Cup competitions have yet to be played so you will see that there will be sufficient’ representative ladies’ hockey for this season if the Association decides to withdraw. There are several lady players quite up to rep. standard and I don’t envy the selectors tlieir job of selecting the team when the time arrives. I will not mention any likely ones in my opinion, as there will be ample time to do that and discuss their play when the ladies’ team is to lie picked. The men’s representative team will be called on next Thursday to defend the Nordon Cup for the first time this season, the challenging te-am being Wairoa, which I believe is a far better team than the one which played here last season, and seeing Poverty Bay just defeated them by one goal to nil. Poverty Bay will have to come to light with some unforeseen play to retain the cup, as to my way of thinking men’s hockey has gone back since the previous season. There are no Olsons, Armstrongs or A.tkinsons among them. However, there is this in their favor, thev are yonng (except for one or two likely ones), and will keep knocking the whole way thorough the game. , I viewed the trial game last Thursday and I think there is material among them to make a ' fairly good team if the players were altered round a bit. I take the Possibles to be the selected team. If that is so, why not shift -Tim Pollock out to his old position, right wing, and put Mr*T<-f).v insMe right. Jim has played in that position for a long time now, so leave him alone; he is one of the old school. . Duncan left inside,,is not so fast as lie used to he but is a great shot in the circle, so put him on the bully end send “Fitz” back to centre half, that’s bis place. Put Pirrin in the inside left position. On his play la.st Thursday he can’t be left out of the team although lie was in the probables. Piesse who was left wing was not up to rep. standard. He seems to have gone back a lot to what he was earlier in the season, so the selectors will have to look around for someone to fill the position. I might suggest V. Babbington (Waerenga-a-hika.) The half line can be altered and made a good defensive one in clropn:ng Babbington (Kiwi) and putting Geo. File on the right, “Fitz” centre and Langhorh left. The full backs are very weak. In fact, there is where the weakness lies. Poverty Bay miss, the old- veterans “Tiny and Tom” and . “Algio” File. These players put up some great games for the, Bay and bear many scars for tlieir work. However, the best offering are a poor substitute for the above’named players and I would aslf the selectors to. consider- serious-, ly the claims of Geo. Corbett for the “right” position/ He is a safe player and can be relied upon to do liis bit. He is certainly at a disadvantage in not being able to move about as fast as many others but hone- of the players in the full hack position this season can show him anv points and as the only goalie possible is Smale the disadvantage may be made rip because they are club mates • and understand one another.

The other full backs which liavo a claim are Harvey (Foresters), and Katene (Waerenga-a-hika). Rum, who was in the possible team on his play last Thursday must be dropped. He is very young and doesn’t seem to have enough strength to cany him through a hard game. He will keep for future seasons. As for “goalie”, now why don’t some of the young players specialise in this position ? Therefore the same goalie is still the only one for the position where he was way back in about 1909. I am informed there is a likelihood of him not being available owing to a severe attack of boils. This was the reason why he did not take the field on Thursday last and had to stand on the line. If he is not available then Scholium (Foresters) should he selected to take his place. It will he interesting to see if my selection is any good, and compare it with the team selected by the appointed selectors. My team on paper looks “the goods.” It is as follows: Goal: Smale. Full backs: G-. Corbett, Katene. Half: G. File, E. Fitzmaurice, Langhorne. Forwards: Pollock, McKay, Duncan, Perrin, V. Babbington. Emergencies: Backs, Scholium (goal), Harvey, and Babbington; forwards, Piesse, Nicol, East.
