THREATENED RACIAL CLASH

HIDEOUS MASSACRES MAY EXTERMINATE OUTN UMBERED ' WHITES. '

LONDON, July 10. That the 8,000,000 natives throughout South Africa will, sooner or later, overwhelm the 1,560,000 whites in that country is the alarming prophecy of Mr G.. Ward Price, the wellKnown special correspondent of the London Daily Mail. He declares that this threatening racial clash overshadows all other South African problems; that the blacks are developing a contentious spirit and color consciousness under the lead of natives who have been educated in America; and that only an increase in the number of whites in the country can prevent their extinction in hideous massacres. “The threatening racial clash, black against white, is the only _ problem that matters in South Africa. It dwarfs the Anglo-Dutch jealousy, Natal’s complaints of unfairness, Rhodesia’s reluctance to enter the Union, and the Rand’s recurring mining riots,” says Mr _G. Ward Price, the Daily Mail’s special correspondent in an article in that paper. “Politicians frame legislative breakwaters against the spreading sea of color,” he continues. “Nevertheless, they know that these are only weak expedients, and that there is no practical remedy. The impending conflict has been caused by the rise of racial unity among the blacks, whose tribal jealousies are disappeariiio- and whose languages are fusing. “There are 8,C00,000 natives throughout South Africa, compared with 1,560,000 whites and the blacks are multiplying far more rapidly than' their ‘white masters,’ who have based the country’s economic development on cheap labor. “The blacks are developing a contentious spirit and color consciousness, under the lead of natives educated in America who are bragging that thp ir function is to lead the primitive tribes in a racial struggle. * “Such canditionn may end m a rehellion, meaning, first, a massacre of the scattered whites, and then a massacre of the half-armed natives. When the Prince of Wales recently reviewed' 4000 natives, who wore their traditional fighting kit, and feathers, were armed with assegais and knobkerries, and were singing their war chant, punctuated by the stabbing of imaginary foes, a South African officer told me that every song was a veiled threat.
