P.B. RUGBY UNION’S NAME IN ART UNION. AIR R-ILLCt 'FEE- ENDT \VATION CAUSES DISCI ASION. There was quite a lively atmosphere at the meeting of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union last evening when a discussion took place on art unions. Regarding the suggested art union to be arranged to raise tunds for the Povertv 3av Rugbv Union, the chairman (Air. A. S. Parker) _.=aid it had been su2gcst , c , d that- tlm l mon slioutd arrange- to combine wit-n three other outside Unions and by that means be in a position to otter attractive prizes, the amount to be in the vicir.tv of £SOOO. He suggested that a delegate be appointed to go to As ehinetoii and interview the iiuiistcr or Internal Affairs regarding the prosnects for an art union and aiso interview the advertising agents regarding the- matter. . Air. J. Joune was appointed delegate to proceed to II olhngton regarding the proposition. Air. Burge drew attention to an advertisement ir. the Press regarding an art union in connection with the. Southland Union. Affixed to the bottom of the advertisement was the name of “A. E. Billcliffe,. the P.B. Rusrbv Union. ' Mr. BuF* cl iff O should not have allowed his name, as the secretary of the local Union, to have connected with that advertisement, for. it the local Union decided to hold an art union themselves, it would be detrimental to their prospects, as people would be inclined to thimt that R ' ert y Bar Union was supporting the Southlard .scheme. He proposed a motion t,> the effect that the Southland authorities be asked to withdraw the ra.me of the secretary of the I B. Union from the advertisement. Mr. Billriiffe (heatedly! : I consider it an insult to propose a motion to that- effect. Air. Burge: Don’t you think that it would have bom *m art or courtesy on the part of the Southland authorities to have asked permission of the loe-1 Union to connect the name of the Pworty Bay Union with their scheme? . Air BilloßfFe : Tt had nothing to do with me. I did net tell them to use the name r,f the- T mon. T: tne members don’t bke it 1 will see that my name is withdrawn from the advertisement immediately. Air. Jen lie stated that he took it that AL-. Purge did rot nicer, any perooral slight; he r.ierc’v meant that using the name of the Poverty Bay Union impaired their chances it they held an art union. Air. Plank suggested that, as Air. Billcliffe had stated that he was going to have his. name withdrawn from the advertisement, the matter so. mid bo dropped. Air. Purge stated that, he was pre, pared to withdraw the motion. His attitude was that the Southland Union was using their name v. itheut authority. The matter then dropped.
