The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED DAILY. TUESDAY, JUNE 16. 1925. THE N.Z. TIMES AND THE GISBORNE SEAT

Tlu;/probability that Hr \\ . L. | Lysitfo - will not bo the official Reform payrr (or National Government) canUQate at the nest General Elections Iras recently referred to in this journal. Since then Mr Lvsnar has had somethin" to say on the subject, he has assumed that we were under a mistaken impression, or, in other words, wrongly believed that he no longer intended to support the present Government or even a National Government if it should Ire formed in its place. Thus it has come about that he has made a statement to the effect that he lias no quarrel with the present Government and that if coalition takes place he will support a National Government. On the other hand, however, he persists in the claim that he was elected in 1922 as an Independent and that he has riot changed his political coat. As a matter of fact, Mr Lvsnar had the Massey Government label in respect of the 1922 election. But that is beside 11io main point. We were not thinking about whether Mr Lvsnar would or would not give bis support to the now Reform Government or any National Government that may be formed when we were dealing with the matter. In mind we had the fact that many Reform supporters in this district affect to Ik? dissatisfied with Mr Lvsnar as its Parliamentary representative. Color is at any rate lent to that contention by common report to the effect that when the local branch of the Reform League comes to discuss the question as to who shall be nominated by it for tin seat Mr Lysnar’s name will not bo the only one that will be .placed before supporters of the party in this electorate. Rumor hath it, for instance, that Mr G, Reynolds and Mr C. Matthews were, some little time ago, approached, in turn, by prominent Government supporters to see if either of them would be willing to stand for nomination, but it is understood that the deputationists' requests have, so far, been unavailing. In this connection, the N.Z. Times, discussing wlmt was assumed in this journal, says that <! it is wrong to assume that Mr Lvsnar will not lie found in the field op the side of Reform when next the platforms will be manned for the election battle.” But whether dir Lvsnar will be the official Government candidate is quite another matter. The Ideal branch of the Reform League, it is understood, intend to have some say on the point. In the meantime, the new Prime Minister remains discreetly silent. He knows that if a coalition takes place Lib-Lab supporters of a National Government as well as its Reform supporters will wish to be consulted as to who shall carry the Government .banner in this electorate. Mr Lvsnar, in any event, intends to take the field and we can merely repeat what wo had previously to say on that point: that even, if three candidates stand he will not be as easily disposed of as his political opponents seem to imagine.
