On Saturday Mr 15. C. Lcvvey, S.M., Jield liis quarterly sitting at Port A.wanui, when a lengthly series of cases was concluded. During the sitting about 2d police cases were heard. There were many charges of obscene language, and assault and breaches of the peace. Two natives, Mo Brown and his brother, Henare Brown, were charged with being in possession of sheepskins from which the ears had been removed. Mo Brown took the responsibility and was fined £ls and costs. Tbo accused were also charged with sheep-stealing, and were fined £3O and £ls respectively with costs totalling about £3O, and were ordered to pay the value of the sheep, £7 10s. The accused were represented by Messrs H. Hei and J. J. Mead.
A long list of civil cases comprised 48 oidinary actions, and 25 judgment summons cases. The large majority of the cases went by default. The most important case was one in which Wi jjrowii claimed the sum of £6O alleged to ho due for timber supplied. The defendant counterclaimed against the plaintiff. Aftei hearing the evidence of both parties, the Magistrate entered a non-suit. ■Mr IT. Hoi appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr J. 11. Kirk for the defendant. The same plaintiff proceeded against C. H. Brooking and Stuart Brooking (Mr Kirk) for the sum of £BB 12s 6d for timber supplied. Judgment was given for the defendant with costs amounting to £5 18s.
