Licenses for motor vehicles were issued during the past fortnight as follows: Twelve private ear driver's licenses and one taxi license.
Four building permits were issued by the Borough inspector ill the last fortnight for buildings of an aggregate value of £1536. including the erection of shop windows £796, and one shop and dwelling £SCO.
The conference between the Borough Council Works Committee. Borough Engineer and the Harbor Board Engineer was mentioned in the following report to the Borough Counc 1 last evening:

The provision of four lints comprising five living quarters for Repongaero quarrynien amounted to approximately £IOO according to a report tallied at the Borough Council last evening.—The question of rents were referred to the works committee with power .to act.
The returns of the tramways service during the past fortnight are as follows: Gladstone Road: Fares collected, £lßl Os 9d; passengers carried, 12 959 ; car mileage, 2,067 ; ear hours, 369.55. Ormond Road: Fares collected- £7O 12s sd; passengers carried, 7.179: car mdeage, 1.194*. car hours. 192.0.
At the Borough Council meeting last evening, Cr. Corson asked what attention was being pa hi to the trees On Kaiti hill, which lie understood were overgrown witn grass and some were taken as dead. The Mayor said that wlien the revenue was cut out last year the Council had no moie money to spend on the work.
“WJien is it possible to improve the road surface of the Peel Streetbridge?” asked Cr. Hill at the Borough Council last evening. ‘‘lt is an eyesore, and there- is going to he an accident there.” The Mayor stated that the engineer intended to fix the roadway of the bridge as soon as the Gladstone Road bridge was finished.
A bidder's foreman of Sheffield accepted a hot of £lO to 10J from h!s employer, a director of a firm now rebuilding in devastated France, that lie would not lay 750 bricks in an hour. He won easily, for be set 809 bricks, which is believed to bc_ a world’s record. On one occasion, when a lad of 16, he laid 1.-750 in three and a-lialf hours.
The T'-ainways Committee reported to the Borough Council last evening that a wire had been received fiom Messrs Lancaster and Vickenuan offering to report upon Gisborne tramways, for a lee of 150 guineas and expenses. The firm anticipated completing report about the end of February. It was decided to accept the offer, and ask that the report be be furnished as early as possible.—lt Was decided to wire Vickenuan aridLancaster asking when they intended, visiting Gisborne.
A complaint that people had been paying nocturnal visits to the Botanical Gardens, and stealing flowers was made by Cr. Mirlield at the Borough Council last evening. He thought that notice should be given that pro-secur-on would follow.—Cr. Todd sa d that the caretaker bad informed him that the Botanical Gardens were in danger of being subjected to depredations every night, raid if the -Council would build a- ' house adjoining the reserve the caretaker could watch over the property. *
A meeting of the Gisliorno Swimming Club was held last evening; present Mr .'I. Ohrisp (in the chair), Mesdames Beer and Heeney... am: Messrs LnngJnnds, Martin, . Greig, Brown and Mclveagne. *t was decided to hold a chib night tills evening. the/events to comprise the 25 yards ladies’ breaststroke hep. (final distance for the Gordon Cup). 50 yards men’s hep., long dive, and the reswim for the Hendricks Rosebowl. Messrs C. Brown and J. Chrisp were appointed hand mappers. The first race will take place at 7SO and, admhsion will be free. Post entries will'be received.

Works carried out by the Electrical Department during the past fortnight are as follows:~-New connections, 1; total, 2555; extensions. 2; new. I j transfers, 19; wiring permits issued' for new work, 6 for extensions, o; for sundry, 1.
“As flies culvert across the Waiteata Creek in Richardsin’s Avenue has collapsed and has been in this state for soino time, 1 would like the Council’s authority to c-all tenders for its reconstruction, the estimated cast being £570,” stated the Borough engineer in a report to the Boiough Council last evening.—The Mayor said that the culvert was on the boundary of the borough and the Cook County, and he suggested that each body should pay half the cost. In event the work could not lie undeitalien until after March 31, and meantime the Council should commumeato with the Cook County legartling reconstruction cost.—The suggestion was agreed to.
A visit of inspection was made to the Kaiti Esplanade, where the Harbor Board contemplated laying i down a railway, and also erecting sheas and cranes, which would stand partly oil the roadway. The Board also desired the road rc-graded to levels to sui - their wharves. Whilst inspecting 'this thoroughfare, Mr Smaill, representing tlie Gisborne Sheepiarmeis, also desired information as to intended levels of the roadway fronting their premises.
