United Press Association—Copyrlcht LONDON, June 9. A feature of Whitsuntide was the enormous attendances at Wembley, estimated at a quarter of a million. The controllers hope the improvement will be continued. 'they make no secret of the fact that the financial outlook is causing grave concern. This probably explains the feelers thrown out during the last, fortnight that the exhibition should be re-open-ed in 1925.-—A. and N.Z.C.A.

There were unprecedented scenes at Wembley. A quarter of a million visitors were registered early in the afternoon, but the crowds continued to arrive. The gates were opened to ticket holders, but owing to the congestion at the turnstiles queues hundreds of yards long waited good humouredly. Restaurants were besieged and all avenues and pavilions thronged. Tho ambulance station dealt with over a hundred minor oases.
The exhibition grounds were brilliantly illuminated at night time, when at the firing of a maroon signal everyone joined in a “great link of Empire handshake,” which completely encircled the lake, and included citizens from; every corner of tlx Empire . The business done at the Australian and New Zealand restaurants was highly successful. They were always packed. There is a strong demand for apples, honey and butter at the X.Z. "pavilion, satisfactory evidence that tiie Exhibition has begun to fulfil its objective. There were, many enquiries from prospective emigrants to Australia and New Zealand with capital ranging from £SOO to £ISOO. —Sun Cable.

PTOMAINE POISONING
SIXTY PERSONS TAKEN ILL
LONDON. June 9
Tho Daily Chronicle states that nearly sixty men, women and children were taken seiiousiv ill at the Empire Exhibition. They were tieaied at the central ambulance station, where the medical officer diagnosed it as ptomaine poisoning. Some of the patients said they had eaten veal and ham pies.—A. and N.Z.C.A.
