INCREASE IN SHEEP FLOCKS
URGED.
AUCKLAND, June 10. The Dominion Industrial Exhibition and Auckland Winter Show was opened to-day hv the Premier. Reviewing the production of the season just ended, Mr Massey said there was* on the whole, very little to complain about. He urged the necessity of bringing the sheep flocks up to the numerical strength of 1918, saying that this year there was an increase of half a-million over last year, which in time would be increased to 800,000. He urged greater attention to the export of bacon, and said he hoped that Britain would encourage the apple trade, saying the preference of os per cwt. against the foreigner would make all the difference. He still hoped Imperial preference would ho reconsidered by'the British Government. The way to meet foreign competition was to be very jealous of the quality of the products, and send the British consumer exactly what he required. The* display of field and garden products is the best for many years. There is no great increase in quantity, hut the quality is an outstanding feature. The entries of roots have been drawn from a wide field. The roots from Rotorua pumice lands would do credit to any show in the Dominion. Potatoes are also shown in great variety, including specimens from Waikato, Wanganui and Wairarapa. Grain and grass seeds are drawn chiefly from Canterbury.—P.A.
