POSITION LOOKS BLACK IN SYRIA. FOUR HUNDERED FRENCH CASUALTIES IN RECENT WEEK. TURKS TRAINED BY GERMANS. LONDON, May 8. ’ The Daily Express states that serious tension exists between the French and Turks on the Syrian frontier, where the Turks have an army corps under Farred din Pasha. The French bombing operations iri Syria are more than a punitive expedition against brigands. Two French aeroplanes have been shot down by turks. French casualties in recent weeks are estimated at four hundred. It is reported that a Bavarian general, Von Lossow, formerly attache at Constantinople, is attending a council of war which is being hold by German instructors training the Turkish * army; To meet the threat, the Trench have -only three divisions in Syria. General "AVeygand is urging that reinforcements be sent, which M. Poincare and Marshal Foch oppose, preferring to evacuate Syria. This would be a menace to Palestine. • The French have not yet ratified the Treaty of Lausanne. —A. and N.Z.C.A.
