The totalisator handled £21,103, againsit £17,001 on the corresponding day last year, making £44,230 for the meeting, as compared with £35,563 last year. A good muster of runners turned out yesterday aiternoon at the Oval for the opening of the harrier season. Mr H. F. Forster, president of the Amateur Athletic Club, in opening the season, wished the club and its runners every success. He complimented the club on its effoits to promote cross country running and said that lie was very pleased to see such a good muster of athletes. Ibis form of out-door exercise was within the reach of everyone and lie was pleased to see so many coming forward to take part in it. Air Foster apologised for the absence or Mr Mason, chairman of the chib, but convoyed the latter’s good wishes for the success of the season. Mr T. R. Gordon, vice-president of the club, and a .supporter, also spoke and wished the club every success. The pack started out m charge or club captain C. Brown, with W. Ingram acting as pacemaker. A goou run over a short course was 'indulged in with a run home over the last half-mile, which resulted in W . Ingram coming in first with L. Gray and J. Mercer close in pursuit. Most' or the runners showed good form and give promise of making some or the races very interesting. The next run will take the form of a paper chase and will start from the Oval next Thursday at 2.30 p.m. Members and intending members, as well as footballers, etc., arc invited to take part in this race, which should be atverv interesting one.

Tliere wc-re, however, a greater number of matches played than on any previous season. Several eup matches were postponed on ac-, count of Poverty Bay’s intention of sending a team to the Coast on dLiferent occasions. This visit, ot course, never eventuated. It is hoped to go into the matter of turl wickets next season. This; with the lioxio oi Tolaga Bay joining the Coast Association, will add a considerable interest to the game. —Special. In the game between the Waterside team and tlie newly-formed Hotspur team, the piny whs confined chief, ly to midfield. The Hotspur team is composed of quite a number of soccer converts and consequently their mitial game was slightly troublesome,
and the goal credited to the Waterside, team was accidentally shot by a Hotspur player in his own goal. At half time the score was—Waterside 1, Hotspur 0. In the second half the Hotspur team was re-arranged and this proved a good movement,. The Waterside team were kept continuously in their own territory. After a quarter of an hour’s play, Morgan, tho Waterside custodian, attempted a long clearance, but the hall was returned by Good and a fine goal was scored. From r.ow on great attempts were made by Waterside to score the winning goal, hut the Hotspur defence, proved too solid. The Hotspur team showed very fair form Tor their first outing. TO KOMARU BAY, May 5. The annual general meeting of the Tokomaru Bay Ladies’ Hockey Club was held in the Puka Hall on Wed- ! nesday last, Airs J. L. Grant presiding over a good attendance. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted, i Votes of congratulations were accorded to Miss < B. Forrester and Mrs Stevens, who were included in the Poverty Bay rep. ladies’ hockey team. Miss C. Oates, the retiring secretary and treasurer, was thanked for her past services to the club. Mrs J. Ij. Gro,ui» wus mm inmouslv re-elected president. Miss D. Pepper was elected secretary and. treasurer for the ensuing year. Miss C. Oates was elected club captain. Mr AY. Oates, sen., was re-elected patron, and also heartily thanked for the assistance he rendered to the touring team whilst competing ior the Haapu Rose Bowl at Gisborne. The following motion was carried unanimously: “That this club is in favor of a sub-association being imailed in the East Coast, and that MY W. Oates, sen. be asked to communicate with ilu! others'clubs in Uawa, Vaiapu and Matakaon Counties, and endeavour to have the sub-association formed as soon as possible, so that a competition may be arranged between the various clubs.” A trophy lias already been promised for competition. 'lt was mentioned at the meeting that Tokomaru Bay had only 'played one game on their own ground last year and one game at Tolaga Bay. * Both games were against Aiangatuiia. Last season there were ladies’ teams playing at To Araroa, Tikitiki, Ruatoreaj Tuparoa, Hiruhamnna, Waipiro, Tokomaru Bay., Mangntuna, and Tolaga Bay. Air Cassia, of Gisborne, has very kindly drawn up a sot of rules which will suitably govern all clubs coming under the proposed sub-Associatiou. TO-MORROW’S MATCHES POSTPONED. The two hockey matches set down for to-morrow, pakeha v. Maori, men’s and ladies’ teams, have been postponed. YESTERDAY’S GAAIES. The hockey season in Gisborne was opened yesterday, when two matches were played on' the reserve, pakeba men and ladies against AJaori men and ladies. The New Zealand Rugby Union received' to-night a copy of the resolution by the Wellington Alarist Club protesting against the failure of the central executive to deal promptly and reasonably with the difficulties that existed between the Alarist Old Boys in Christeljurch and the Canterbury Rugby Union. Air S. S. Dean: I suppose all we can do is to receive this. Air E. Wylie said that they had still to hear from Canterbury. Air C. Mullany: Are we going to make any attempt to got them back into the game? Mr Dean: We are waiting on Canterbury now.
Mr Mullany: 1 think we should shako them up again and I think the lot will come hack if they get the ■chance. The longer it goes the worse it gets. Mr Dean: Hold it over till next meeting and that will give them an opportunity.
