STOPPED BY MOTHER’S DIS-
APPROVAL.
Written beside a notice of marriage In. a North- London register office are the w'ords “Mother disapproves; consent withheld.” and behind them is the story of a motor mechanic’s intended marriage to a nurse. Tiio bridegroom, who is 20, lives in Highgate with his mother. His father died some years ago, and as lie is under age the registrar asked him to get tlie consent of his mother. “n the dav the marriage was to have taken place the mother hurried to the office and told the registrar: I have decided that I cannot allow my son to get married. He is out of* work and lias been for some tme, and as far as I can see he has no prospect of obtaining employment. I believe in marriage and certainly will not stand in my son’s way when he can keep a wife. ■ He is
drawing the dole. Unaware .of the mother’s decision, the couple arrived for the ceremony, and the bridegroom left with the retention of going home to “settle the matter.” He has not returned to the office ykt.
