BURGLAR’S INCOME TAX.
VOLUNTARY PAYMENTS
“I ALWAYS PLAY FAIR.” -
An “honest” burglar who pays bis income tax, is virtuously patriotic, and “never hurt a guy' or robbed a poor man” in his life, is the latest curiosity in New York. He lives at St. Paul, Minnesota, hut heymnd this vague indication of his whereabouts the United States Internal Revenue Bureau in that city will tell nothing about him—certainly not to the police—nor will it reveal Ills name.
In a letter accompanying his tax return and remittance the mail writes—
“I am giving, my' name and telling you whore I live because I know your 'department has to keep it secret —that is the law.” This curious letter reads in part:— “Dear Revenue Agent,—This is my income for 1923. 1 didn’t file one last year because my income was under 1000 dollars —way under, because 1 was in the cooler (gaol) eight months of the year. “My" business is burglary, and I’m not ashamed to say so because I never hurt a- guy or robbed a poor man in mv life. ...
“If more of your millionaires would file their income taxes as honest as 1 do there would he a lot more money in the United States '1 reasury. 1 always play fair with 1 ncle Sam.”
