DAMAGING DEER.

OPEN SEASON ADVOCATED

WELLINGTON, May 6

An open season for deer was advocat ed by Rotarian Press in an address to-dav. Though 1000 to 2000 deer are shot every year the numbers are increasing and immense damage is done. The fact that venison could not be sold resulted in a huge economic waste. The hides were not worthless but could be turned to good account. Some beautiful skins had been cuied and could be used for rugs and other purposes. Mr Press said the time had arrived when the Government should do away with licenses in certain aieas throwing them open for deer to be shot and the meat marketed and some use made of the skins. Mr Mclntosh Ellis, Director of Forestry, said there were 300,000 deer in New Zealand and the number was increasing rapidly, doing, enormous* damage.—-1 .A.
