Sir, —I notice .in your issue of tms morning that the chairman of the Kia Ora Dairy Co., stated at their meeting of shareholders, the company’s "butter was bringing Is 5d per pound at the ship’s side. Here or in London he does not say, but it is very gratifying to the poor unfortunate householder who is paying a,.a lias been paying for months Is lOd and Is 9d nett spot cash for this same commodity, to know that the philanthropic butter factories are giving away their factory produce to London at "nearly 25 per cent, less than we are paying at the factory door. Has jt ever occurred to uie shareholders that by selling their butter to consumers here at a parity with the London figure, the consumption would be very much greater locally, instead of continuing to forward it to an already congested London market. Perhaps the* secretary is not aware that first grade butter is retailed in Dunedin at Is 6d per pound and is equal to anything manufactured in New Zealand. Presumably that butter cost the retailer Is 4d per lb. Now, Air Gisborne retailer, what about importing that butter from Dunedin and giving your customers the benefit of your new Inlying capacity, or are you compelled to buy locally ?—I am, Yours etc., CONSUMEiv,
