TRAGEDY OK CRUISSER.

CORONER RETURNS VERDICT OF MURDER AND SUICIDE. SUGGESTS DISCIPLINE IS TOO RIGID. (Received Mav 5, 9.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 5. At the enquiry into the tragedy on the cruiser Brisbane officers gave evidence that they knew nothing of the alleged assaults previous to the murder. They stated that the men were encouraged to come forward with grievances. The coroner in recording a verdict of murder against Brown and suicide said it seemed strange that a series of assaults should not come to the notice of the officers. This suggested to him that the discipline must m 3 very rigid, and it might be well for tlie naval authorities to look into the whole question. He did not say there was any reason for altering the system in any way, but it would be well to look into it and see whether something could not be done to make it certain that those responsible for the safety of men would discover matters which suggest that a danger exists on a particular ship at a particular time.—U.P.A.
