' - - ——— **» ] MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Warkohu County Council was held yesterday. Present: C ! rs. T. B. Spence (chairman), M. Doyle, A. A. Fraser, O. V. Bussell, J. Kain, McLean, H. J. F. Tombleson. A letter was received from Mr. A. Macallan notifying that he intended fencing the deviation on Oliver road as it had not been legalised. He stated that the old track on the legal road line would require to be put in order, beore it could be used.—The matter was left to the riding member and the overseer. In a further communication Mr. Macallan asked that Oliver road be put in order.—The Auditor-General advised that the position regarding expenditure under the Highways Act would be similar to that which exists when roads are declared main roads under the Counties Act. —Beceived. Tl-o Main Highways Board wrote seeking assurance that, pending definite arrangements for the delegation to the Council of the powers of the Board, the Council will carry on he work of maintenance up to the present standard, the Board contributing one-third of the cost.—The clerk stated that as an immediate reply : was ' required after consulting the ! chairman the assurance asked for had I been given. it was also suggested i that the road from Waikohu to Motuhora via Otoko might be declared a Government main highway, and the Board desired to know whether the Council would contribute to the upkeep of its present expenditure. Or. Bussell was authorised to interview the district engineer, with power to arrange the amount of the Council’s contribution. j -The Cook Hospital Board advised I that a committee had been conferring with the Council in reference to I the Board’s demands for payment of the sum of £214- 18s 9d. It was decided to notify the Board that delegates could interview the Council* at the next meeting.

Mr. J. Rodgers applied for permission to erect a car shed on the side of the road on Messrs. Mander and Bods’ property. The clerk was instructed to inform Mr. Bodgers that the Council had no power to grant his request. Any building placed on tlio road remained only during the Council’s pleasure. The Poutuhu settlers asked the Council to take steps to raise a loan of £22UO to carry out improvements to the road as outlined in Mr. C. E. Armstrong’s report. It was also requested that a grant of £ISOO be applied for as a subsidy on the loan.— it was decided to take the necessary action to give effect to the request. The Cook County Council’s suggestion that a conference should lie held to discuss the control of the blackberry pest was adopted. Crs. Doyle, Eraser and Bussell were appointed to represent Waikohu County. The Treasury notified that the first , instalment of tjhe Waikohu bridge : loan amounting to £2621 ISs 4d maI tured on February 1, 1924, and the half-yearly demand would be redueedi bv £53 19s lOd.—Received. Dr. W. B. Mercer, Medical Officer of Health, wrote explaining the working of the new regulations re plumbing and drain laying, and pointed out that the Council would iequiro to pass further by-laws dealing with the licensing of plumbers and drain layers.—ft was resolved to adopt the new regulations and to provide for the issue of licenses. The East Coast Commissioner wrote, asking the Council to make application to the Minister of PublicWorks for a free grant’ for improvement to the access read at W aimana station.—Agreed to. The report from Messrs. Iv. and Gardiner in reference to the Ivanakanaia road was read and adopted. In accordance with the overseer’s recommendations, the addition of another span to Yenly’s bridge was authorised. It was resolved to rescind me Council’s resolution concerning the sum of £SO for the Waihirere domain fund. Messrs. Jones and Le Prou were appointed jointly poundkeepers and rangers at Matawai. Accounts amounting to £2317 12s 3d were passed for payment.
