CLIFFORD SUPPORTED MINISTER OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS CRITICISED. NAPIER, April 11. A full meeting of the committee ol Lite Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club to-a-iy resolved that the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club committee is sincerely plateful to Sir Geo. Clifford for his action in the direction of representing the opposition of many clubs to the p' oposed Wellington race meeting cn April 26, as well as his own protest as president of the Racing Conference, and we regret that Ins reoresentations to the Minister had no effect. We fear that the authority of the Racing .Conference, and the president’s position is being seriously flouted The whole question of control is now threatened by the arbitrary action of the Minister. We therefore, urge the president seriously to consider the question of immediately calling a special meeting of the confluence to uphold the authority of the ruling body.—P.A, NOTES AND NEWS. The owner of Loughrea wasted no .time in scratching his horse for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicap (says “Argus” in the Christchurch “Star”). If Loughrea had remained in he would have been one of the Great Autumn favourites, for a study of the figures shows that he was well treated in the mile and a half race. Several Great Autumn candidates were behind the Ivilbroney gelding when he scored his easy win in the Dunedin Cup last month. Baldowa, who was second, comes in now 21b. better, while of the unplaced lot Limelight is handicaped 51b. better, Palestrina 41b. better, and AVinning Hit 51b better. Musketoon has grown into a fine horse. He was not backed to any great extent at Awapuni, but he looks really well, and the way he shaped indicates that a big race at Easter should not be beyond him . Starland is a good jumper, and as ho is also a great stayer, someone missed an opportunity in AVellington during race week to get hold of an early winner of a good steeplechase. Ranui will be ready for one of the early steeplechases. He is a brilliant fencer, and over the bush fences in Sydney and Medbourne it would take some woighfc to stop him. Sensible was very bad at the harrier on the second day at Awapuni, and was started in the rear of the field. AY. S. Bagby nevertheless got her out ivell, and she occupied a prominent position for about seven furlongs. Star Ranger will probably be given a sneli. Ho has* not yet fulfilled his early promise. Lively Fire, a five-year-old gelding by Campfire—Vivandel, trained by M. Gardner for Mr AY. F. Alexander, started twice at Awapuni. He lias a lot of pace, lout do«S not ' stay too well. He may pick up a hack sprint race in the near future. Battle Scone, 'by Martian—Edna, who won the Great Easter Handicap at Riecarton last season and who during the following stud season was mated with the, Polymeius horse, Paladin, imported by Mr J. F. Buchanan, and now located at Ms Kinlcck stud, is to be sent to Australia for the autumn sales, and two others from Mr G. Fulton’s stud, who , will accompany her, are AVartime, by Martian—Samisen (in foal to Paladin) and an unnamed mare by AVinkie— Samisen. The last-mentioned is in foal to Sutala, the sire of Pluto. Passionless w<as ba'cked with con- J sidorable confidence at Awapuni. Her j rider gave her every chance to win, j hut she was not quite good enough, j ; and'failed in the very last Mt. ; 1 There was some talk in Australia of endeavouring to arrange for H. Gray to go over to Australia to ride The .Cypher in the Sydney Cup. r M : f
