SWIMMING

'OLYMPIC CLUB CARNIVAL

IN AID OF TEPID BATH FUND

With .commendable enterprise the 'Olympic Swimming Club* despite the .fact that the swimming season is practically finished, organised a carnival at .the school bath last evening in aid of the funds for the pubV lie tepid baths for Gisborne, ad--1 iPSsion being by specially marked union ticket. There-was a large ( attendance and the funds for the public bath will benefit considerably as the result. The programme was one of the most attractive arranged by the club, a feature being the humorous itemu, which were particularly good and caused roars of laughter, especially the diving competition in which a ■ dozen female impersonators took part to the amusement of the spectators. Entries for the carnival were free, and no prizes were awarded, except trophies donated by swimming enthusiasts for the greatest number of points gained throughout the evening. Practically all the swimmers of note in Gisborne took part in the carnival, necessitating very large -“fields” in every event. Despite this, however, the programme was pushed through energetically by the club’s secretary, Mr. M. Fry, to whom, assisted by a capable committee, much credit is duo.

The trophies for the greatest number of points (open to all competitors) were won by three girl swimfers, Miss M. Sutcliffe being first with 14 points, followed by Miss Tran.klin with 12 points, and Miss N. Eastwood with 11 points. A special trophy for the most points for the ladies' events was also won by Miss M. Sutcliffe.

An unusual sight was presented in the opening event of the night, the '2O yards “splash”. Over fifty competitors dived in practically at the same time to race across the bath, and back. A dozen touched the finish-

ing side at the same time and 1 the referee, Mr. A. F. Langridge, solved the difficulty by announcing a dead heat without mentioning any names. The club introduced an innovation by supplying hot coffee to competitors, and on account of the lateness of tphe season it was particularly acceptable. The officials were: Judges, Messrs. A J. W. Mann, C. Ivess, and D. McKeague; timekeeper, Mr. A. Stor.eham; referee, Mr A. F. Langridge; announcer, Mr. C. O. Hansen.

In opening tlie carnival, Mr. A. Stoneham, vice-president of the club, expressed pleasure at the large at- .. tendance. The club’s carnival a fort-p-night ago was to.have been the last of the season, but the club bad decided to stage that evening’s programme in aid of the tepicl bath fund. He wished to thank all those who were taking part. Ho also thanked the press for their support, particularly the Gisborne Times, which had given much valuable- space to swimming. He urged support for the tepid bath, which would benefit the whole community. Mr. Stoneham then declared the carnival open.
